Reporting to the manager of Food and Services - Enterprise, the Canada summer job student is responsible for the successful completion of the project allotted. Qualified candidates possess exceptional organizational and documentation skills, work well in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, and hold values that support our corporate vision of being “a community where youth are embraced and will thrive.”

Responsibilities, but are not limited to the following:

  • Water and tend to plants, lawns, and/or gardens
  • Weed, prune, and trim trees and plants. Plant bulbs, flowers, shrubs, and trees
  • Operate and maintain landscape maintenance equipment
  • Train youth on how to maintain plants and grow food
  • Facilitate sessions on harvesting food, box planting, and time planting
  • Provide information and resources on food security, including how to utilize garden vegetables to assist with meal planning and budgeting.

Qualifications:

  • Current Police Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Experience in gardening, landscaping, or plant care, including watering, weeding, pruning, and planting
  • Ability to operate and maintain landscape maintenance equipment safely
  • Knowledge of urban gardening techniques such as box planting, time planting, and harvesting
  • Experience training or mentoring youth in gardening or food-growing practices
  • should be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment. The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
  • The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
  • Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, a youth visa, or a work visa, are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labor market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labor market.

Contract length: 10 weeks

Pay: $18.33 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 35 per week
