Reporting to the manager of Food and Services - Enterprise, the Canada summer job student is responsible for the successful completion of the project allotted. Qualified candidates possess exceptional organizational and documentation skills, work well in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, and hold values that support our corporate vision of being “a community where youth are embraced and will thrive.”

Responsibilities, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist in preparing healthy meals and snacks for youth in a shelter setting
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards in all kitchen areas
  • Support inventory management, ordering, and record keeping
  • Handle kitchen tools and equipment safely and professionally
  • Communicate effectively with team members about menu changes and tasks
  • Help with recipe selection, costing, and consistent meal preparation
  • Follow all food safety regulations and organizational policies
  • Support menu planning and execution for the catering contract

Qualifications:

  • Current Police Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Passion for working in a kitchen, where the focus is on creating healthy meals and snacks for youth accessing a homeless shelter.
  • Demonstrated abilities in administrative tasks such as ordering, inventory, record keeping, etc.
  • Demonstrated professional work habits, including knife handling, and utilizing industrial kitchen equipment
  • Strong communication skills, including communicating additions or changes to the assignments as they arise throughout the shift.
  • Experience with menus: recommending recipes, costing of recipes, to creating a consistent and quality food product.
  • Ability to adhere to all Youth Opportunities Unlimited Guidelines, Policies, Rules, and Regulations.
  • Experience in direct communication, menu cycle development, implementation, and expansion with catering contracts.
  • Demonstrated compliance with all governmental and regulatory requirements, ensuring safe food handling practices.
  • Knowledge of standards for cleanliness and hygiene in the various kitchen areas, including refrigerators and storerooms, and that food products are rotated to ensure high standards of freshness.
  • Should be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment. The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
  • The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
  • Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, a youth visa, or a work visa, are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labor market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labor market.

Contract length: 10 weeks

Pay: $18.33 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 35 per week
