Reporting to the manager of Social Enterprise, the Canada summer job student is responsible for the successful completion of the project allotted. Qualified candidates possess exceptional organizational and documentation skills, work well in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, and hold values that support our corporate vision of being “a community where youth are embraced and will thrive.”

Responsibilities, but are not limited to the following:

•    Execute day-to-day operations within the Woodshop facility. 
•    Assist in the training of youth on woodworking skills while adhering to all site health and safety guidelines. 
•    Maintain and update data on the youth’s training competencies.
•    Interact with guests and members of the community, providing service and representing YOU.
•    Comply with all governmental and regulatory requirements, ensuring safe tool handling practices.
•    Operate shop-specific power tools – panel saw, table saw, mitre saw, band saw, power planer, drum sander, edge bander, Kreg hole drill, drill press, boring machine, router table, hand sanders, drills, cutting saws and grinder.
•    Complete cleaning and preventative maintenance of power tools and equipment – oiling, greasing, blade and tooling replacements.
•    Complete installation and ensure proper function of hardware on cabinets and/or custom wood projects.
•    Ensure proper fit and function of cabinet parts and assembly of cabinets.
•    Rework of wood projects as required.
•    Gluing, sanding, oiling, varnishing, cleaning, and detailing wood projects.
•    Use of branding iron for company and custom logo.
•    Consults with various staff regarding progress and issues arising from programs.
•    Participates in daily team meetings regarding production and programming needs, upcoming business needs, day to day operations.
•    Answers questions regarding programming for internal YOU staff and external community services 
•    Participate in health and safety training, including WHMIS and apply this knowledge in the workplace.
•    Report any violations of the Health and Safety Act or the regulations, or the existence of any hazard. 
•    Ensure all workplace incidents are reported in a timely manner in accordance with legislation, and YOU policies and procedures for workplace injuries and incidents.

Qualifications:

  • Current Police Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Basic maintenance of tools (oiling, greasing, replacing blades/tooling)
  • Gluing, sanding, oiling, varnishing, and detailing wood.
  • Ability to safely operate shop-specific power tools (e.g., table saw, sander, drill press. Basic woodworking skills like sanding, assembling, varnishing, etc.
  • Should be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment. The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
  • The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
  • Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa, or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labor market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labor market.

Job Type: Canada Summer Job 

Contract length: 8 weeks

Pay: $18.33 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 35 per week
