Reporting to the Cafe (FOH) Team Leader & Events Coordinator, the Cafe Coordinator plays a critical role at the intersection of daily café operations and youth training. The successful candidate is a proven leader skilled in preparing various breakfast and lunch menu items, making espresso-based drinks, serving customers at a counter, cleaning machinery and tables, and collecting payments. The Café Coordinator has proven experience training young people in the food and beverage sector, while helping them overcome anxieties and other barriers, so they develop a new confidence for future employment.

The Cafe Coordinator is responsible for providing coaching, mentorship and individualized support to youth participating in YOU’s Youth Training Program. Working collaboratively with culinary and employment teams, the incumbent fosters a safe and engaging workplace where youth receive skill-based coaching, pre-employment support, and encouragement to build life and job-readiness skills. Through direct shadowing, motivational mentorship, and structured goal setting, the Cafe Coordinator ensures youth remain on track with their personal development plans, while supporting hard and soft skill development, including customer service, reliability, time management and teamwork.

Responsibilities:

  • Establishes training goals in collaboration with Youth Employment Services and youth.
  • Create & maintain confidential youth files, including documentation of important interactions, issue management and milestone achievements.
  • Meets with youth in a flexible and professionally friendly way to maximize participation and carry out action plans and goals.
  • Assist, evaluate, and modify youth support plans, as required.
  • Develop appropriate rapport with youth, using past work and life experiences and understanding of agency programming.
  • Identify youth needing follow-up and support from other community professionals and/or agency services.
  • Provide a supportive environment that allows youth empowerment and a successful transition towards employment or education.
  • Work with Youth Employment Services Staff to support youth moving into a job placement after Enterprise.
  • Participate in joint case management meetings with key community partners and assist, as required.
  • Support pre-employment meetings to build relationships with potential new employers
  • Gather information for reports to funders, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of data.
  • Process daily/weekly attendance and assist payroll.
  • Provide monthly data and verbal reports to the Manager, Food Services and Cafe (FOH) Team Leader & Events Coordinator, in accordance with requirements: specific work plans, activity statistics, outcome reports, and other key issues.
  • Provide FOH Café oversight to FOH staff, youth, volunteers, students, and customers when the Team Leader is not on-site.
  • Assist with daily FOH food and beverage preparation, serving, cleaning, and collecting payments, while providing exceptional customer service.
  • Support and embed YOU’s mission, vision and values with staff, youth, and volunteers.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and health and safety training, including WHMIS, and apply this knowledge in the workplace.
  • Report any violations of the Health and Safety Act, regulations, or the existence of any hazard, when required.
  • Ensure all workplace incidents are reported in a timely manner in accordance with legislation, and YOU policies and procedures for workplace injuries and incidents
  • Other related duties, as required

Qualifications:

This position requires the following:

  • The position normally requires completion of post-secondary education at a college level.
  • Minimum of 2 years combined experience in a food services prep, barista and/or serving role
    Required Certifications:
  • Safe Food Handling & Smart Serve
  • Experience in employee & youth training would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to listen, observe, engage, coach, mentor and provide verbal and hands-on support.
  • Proven ability to support youth to help overcome barriers to employment and create training action plans.
  • Provided 1-on-1 coaching on food services and customer service.
  • Demonstrated abilities in administrative tasks such as record keeping and statistical tracking.
  • Experience facilitating employment training, maintaining information on training competencies, and development of goal-based action plans to develop skill competencies.
  • Experience working with youth affected by poverty, mental health, justice, addictions and/or homelessness.
  • Prior experience working with a diverse population, including people from diverse cultural backgrounds, and LGBTQ2S groups.
  • Demonstrates strong customer service skills that enhance the Café guest experience.
  • Proven ability to balance training during service delivery, while upholding professional customer standards.
  • Strong communication skills, including communicating changes throughout the shift.
  • Knowledge of public health standards for food service settings, such as safe food handling, cleanliness, etc.
  • Experience with food production in a café/restaurant setting, with a strong emphasis on customer service.
  • Experience with providing table-side service or working in a quick service restaurant; experience using a Point-Of-Sale.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and other software programs is required.
  • Flexibility in scheduling to meet service needs.
  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check will be required upon hiring

HOURS OF WORK

  • 35 hours per week, flexible schedule depending on the needs of YOU.
  • Extended hours and evening work may be required from time to time.

Starting Wage:

CA$38,529.40 - CA$54,709.71 per year
