FOR A YOUNG person to be successful they require education, experiential learning opportunities, basic healthcare, a roof over their head and an opportunity to work and build a career path. London is blessed to have many organizations that focus on youth services to meet these needs, including Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU), which is the most comprehensive provider of youth services in Southwestern Ontario.

TD Bank Group presented Youth Opportunities Unlimited with a $150,000 gift

In celebration of TD’s presence in London for 150 years, a gift announcement took place in support of new programming at Youth Opportunities Unlimited

LONDON, ON – March 19, 2014 – In support of the local community in London, TD Bank Group made a significant gift to Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU), a non-profit organization which has been providing youth focused services in London, Ontario and Middlesex County for more than 30 years. With a gift of $150,000, the donation will support a new program that will address the needs of up to 12 young moms and their children.

“London has always been a special place for us and having been a part of this community for the last 150 years has been an amazing journey for all of us at TD,” said Howard Thompson, Senior Vice President, Western Ontario Region, TD Bank Group. “And we are thrilled to be here with Youth Opportunities Unlimited who have made a significant impact on this community for many years and are proud to support their continuous efforts to help so many of London’s residents.”

In addition to providing housing, the expanded program will offer a supportive and integrated focus on healthcare, poverty reduction, employment/education and life-plan coaching for each of the families. The units will be located both within and in proximity to YOU’s Cornerstone building to draw on the facility’s educational, healthcare, employment, training and support programs for youth.

“We are extremely grateful to TD Bank Group for its confidence in this important community initiative” said YOU Executive Director, Steve Cordes. “Housing up to 12 young moms and their children is the logical extension of our dedication to building healthy, positive futures for youth. TD’s generous donation gives YOU valuable leverage so we can continue to secure the support necessary to fully realize all this initiative can be.”

The Cornerstone opened in November, 2011. Funding for the renovation of the three-storey heritage building was from all levels of government, local businesses, organizations and individuals. The Cornerstone currently houses multiple programs and services for local youth including:

- Youth Action Centre
- Alternative Education Program in partnership with Thames Valley District School Board
- Cornerstone Primary Health Clinic
- YOU Made It Café
- Transitional Housing Program
- Community Meeting Room

“Being a young mom can be incredibly overwhelming, causing feelings of fear, inadequacy and intimidation” said Victoria Koning, who is a resident in The Cornerstone housing with her infant son. “We, as young moms, are often ill equipped with the tremendous responsibility facing us. With TD’s support we can ensure young moms have access to skills and connections that are necessary to provide their children with the best possible future, and with this donation we have the opportunity to reach our hand out to more young moms, build new friendships and provide positive relationships and support as our children grow.”
