Public health officials with the Middlesex-London Health Unit have determined a COVID-19 outbreak at YOU's Housing First Youth Shelter. YOU is working in partnership with the Health Unit to support onsite testing of staff and participants, and YOU is supporting individuals needing to quarantine.
As community spread of COVID-19 has escalated during the current wave of the pandemic, vulnerabilities of particular populations within our community have become increasingly pronounced. Public health officials report young adults as the group most infected in this wave. It has been known throughout the pandemic that people experiencing homelessness are at an increased risk of COVID-19 due to lack of isolation. There is also higher risk of extended illness from COVID-19 due to other underlying health issues many people experiencing homelessness face. YOU is eager to see vaccinations rolled out to protect this population at the earliest possible time.
Great measures are being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at all YOU locations, and the outbreak is limited to YOU's Housing First Youth Shelter. Youth, staff and guests are welcome to continue accessing the agency's resources at all other locations, within the existing limitations of the provincial lockdown. We do encourage remote support where possible, and our team can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org / 519-432-1112.
Thank you and stay safe.
