YOU was 1 of 8 projects in Southwestern Ontario receiving funding from the Ontario government’s Poverty Reduction Fund. Deb Matthews, Deputy Premier, President of the Treasury Board and Minister Responsible for the Poverty Reduction Strategy said “With this fund, we are establishing a new way of tackling poverty, one that’s rooted in evidence. I’m thrilled to see that these local community organizations are helping us build the body of evidence we need to make sure we are investing in what works and what makes people’s lives better”, in an announcement today.
YOU received $595,000 to support young people who are not in school or training to complete their high school education. This project is a collaborative partnership with the two regional school boards with a strong evaluation component to measure outcome and impact. “These investments come at a time when many people face challenges related to poverty. We have the opportunity to create and test new initiatives that provide long term change for people. For YOU, it allows us to look at the unique social enterprises we have created and sharpen them with partners to bring long term poverty relief. The external evaluation will measure those impacts and allow for application in communities across our province.” said Steve Cordes, Executive Director, YOU.
